Charles M. Barrett was for most of his career the leader of radiation oncology and tumor service at the University of Cincinnati, a trustee of the university, the president and chairman of two Cincinnati-based insurance companies, a director of several local companies and, in his late years, the 1987 "greatest living Cincinnatian." Charles Barrett was born in Cincinnati in 1913. He attended college at Xavier University, where he was a tackle on its football team and an aspiring boxer. He spurned boxing and entered the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he graduated in 1938. He joined die medical faculty in 1945 and rose through the ranks in both surgery and radiology, dedicating his efforts to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
