When John Diaconis went for his oral examinations at the American Board of Radiology, he told his examiners, "Let's not waste your time. Show me your most difficult cases and I will solve them." According to his story, they did, he did, and he passed with top marks.As a resident at the University of Maryland and later as a faculty member there, he was recognized as an astute diagnostic radiologist, able to make most diagnoses and intent on following up by scrubbing for surgery or watching the postmortem.
