THE COCONUT INDUSTRY IN SOLOMON ISLANDS

The coconut industry, especially copra production and export, has long been the backbone of the economy of Solomon Islands since 1940s. It is mainly smallholder or rural family based and provided self-employment and income for over 85 % nation's 400,000 people. Coconut is grown and spreads throughout the scattered islands with holdings ranging from 0.25-5.0 hectares. There are a few commercial plantations of 50-1000 hectares while Russell Islands Plantations Estates Ltd (previously Lever Plantations) is the biggest with over 28,847 hectares. Unfortunately, all of these commercial plantations are no longer operational at present.
