THE COCONUT INDUSTRY IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) recognizes the significant role coconut industry has played in the development of coastal and maritime areas in PNG before and after Independence. However, the coconut industry is at a crossroad as copra production becomes financially unprofitable on a cyclic pattern for plantations and smallholders. Copra making has also been referred to as a form of slavery for the coconut smallholders. Hence, alternative approaches of reviving the industry in PNG have been under consideration for some time. The coconut industry stakeholders agreed in the Southern Region Coconut Seminar held on 6 June 2005 in Port Moresby to develop a national coconut development plan for rehabilitating the coconut industry in Papua New Guinea.
