Sri Lanka is the single largest exporter of brown coir fiber to the world market. Other than brown coir fibre Sri Lanka produces another type of coir known as white coir fibre. In Sri Lanka, the coir industry is well established in North-Westera, Western and Southern provinces. More modernized, mechanized, export-oriented brown-fibre industry is established in the North-Western and Western provinces whereas less modernized, and mostly manual white coir fibre industry is established in the Southern province.
