Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin are trying to improve the energy efficiency of so-called spray-on solar panels that rely on a specially formulated nano-crystal ink. Brain Korgel, a nanomaterial chemist, is focused on the potential of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS). Nanocrystal particles of these inorganic materials are dispersed in a solvent, creating an ink which can be sprayed onto plastic, glass and even fabric. Metal contacts on the top and bottom extract the charge, and the middle part absorbs the light. He and his team have made devices that have an efficiency of 3%. However, an efficiency of 10% is needed in order to be commercial. Korgel thinks he can get there.
