The extent of damage caused by brine on a productive land and two adjacent streams in Oklahoma state, USA, was assessed. Data on soil quality showed that over time the combined effects of brine and erosion had left the land devoid of vegetation. Detailed soil analyses showed elevated levels of soluble salt, moderate pH (7.5), high clay content (>38%), electrical conductivity values that ranged from 7 to 62 dSm-1, and very high exchangeable sodium percentage (70%). The water quality of the two receiving streams was severely impacted by high salt and sediment loading. Experiments were also conducted to formulate amendment blends that were economical, environmentally acceptable, and agriculturally suitable to support and sustain plant growth in the brine-affected area. Four different amendment components were selected: FBA, gypsum, sulfur dust, and turkey litter. It was concluded that the use of fluidized bed ash and turkey litter to restore a waste land, were both economically feasible and environmentally sound. Within 6 months,~ 90% of the salt-damaged land was rehabilitated to support the growth of sprigged Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon).
