The growth characteristics of the scallop Chlamys farreri under intensive raft-culture and its relationships with major environmental factors were studied. The experiment was conducted from May 1997 to April 1998 in four farming areas of Sishiliwan Bay, Yantai, China. The instantaneous growth rates of shell height, wet weight, fresh and dried soft tissue of scallops were measured and calculated during the course of this study. The results showed obvious seasonal variation in the growth in Sishiliwan Bay. The main factors affecting the growth rate of the scallops were water temperature and food supply in the farming areas. The growth rates of the scallops cultured in Jinggouwan and Yueliangwan areas were faster than that in Kongtongdao and Qingqiangzhai areas. The relationships between the instantaneous growth rates in dried tissue weight of C. farreri with water temperature, and particulate organic matter (POM) in Jinggouwan area and Yueliangwan area were simulated. Growth rate declined when water temperature was below 5 degrees C. Between 5 and 23 degrees C, growth rate increased with the increasing of water temperature. Growth rate sharply declined when water temperature was above 23 degrees C. The scallops stopped growing when POM was less than 0.90 mg/L and grew rapidly with increasing POM. When POM was above 3.67 mg/L, the growth rate of the scallops decreased again. [References: 28]
