Periodic fever syndromes are the founding members of a larger family of conditions known as autoinflam-matory syndromes. Following the discovery of the genetic basis for TRAPS, the concept of autoinflammation was first proposed in 1999 to differentiate between the immunopathogenesis of PFS and that of classical autoimmune diseases.
