Uniform sphere-like YBO_3:Eu~(3+) phosphor particles (PPs) were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route at 180 °C for 24 h with CTAB as a surfactant. The as-prepared samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). It was found that the ratio of CTAB to Y~(3+) played a key role in the formation of sphere-like YBO_3:Eu~(3+) PPs. High annealing temperature (over 1100 °C) leaded to the appearance of new phase (Y_3B0_6) and the disappearance of the sphere-like morphology. It was found from PL results that the sphere-like YBO_3:Eu~(3+) PPs exhibited higher ratio (R/O value) compared with the block-like ones obtained using conventional solid-state technique, and their emission intensity enhanced with increasing annealing temperature up to 1000 °C and then declined with further increasing temperature due to the formation of new phase.
