The most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere is lyme disease. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an ixodes tick infected with spirochetes Borrelia afzelii or Borrelia garinii (most commonly in Europe) or Borrelia burgdorfei (in the USA). Cases of lyme disease confirmed by UK laboratories have increased tenfold since records began in 1986. Several hundred cases are reported every year, mainly in the southwestern regions of the country during summer months.
