Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), with an annual incidence of 1-2 per 100,000, is the most common cause of neuromus-cular paralysis in the western world. Even with modern intensive care and intravenous (iv) immunoglobulin (Ig) treatment there remains an associated mortality rate between 3.5% and 12% in the acute phase and residual disability rate of 20% or more. Many other patients are left with long-term fatigue.
