The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline on the management of type 2 diabetes, prepared by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), was the subject of a conference at the College in June 2008. This report highlights some themes of that meeting, concentrating on where aspects of cardiovascular risk management differ from non-diabetic people, on specific recommendations in regard to microvascular complications, on the guideline's key recommendations, and on recent aspects of blood glucose control. This review does not seek to be comprehensive.
