Occasionally during exploration of the hand it is not possible to immediately determine exactly which digital (or common digital) nerve is encountered. It may be necessary to extend a wound or trace nerves proximally or distally to confirm this. However, a simple intra-operative test can be undertaken that will immediately illustrate the course of the nerve.
