As laser refractive surgery provides steadily improving refractive outcomes, attention has shifted to improving visual quality by addressing higher order aberrations of the optical system of the eye. In general, ocular wavefront-guided systems and corneal topography-guided systems are the two main ways of achieving this goal. "Aberration free," "wavefront optimized," and "aspheric" algorithms apply additional excimer ablation to minimize the spherical aberration induced by myopic corrections. However, this does not take into account preoperative spherical aberration nor does it address other aberrations such as coma and trefoil, in ways that can be addressed by wavefront- and topography-guided systems.
