ab:Nitrogen fertilization of mountain meadows has to include agronomic, economic, and fertilizer recovery considerations when determining the appropriate N timing, rate, and source. Fertilizer N resulted in large increases In forage production and protein concentration. However, the optimum economic rate varied with source, time of application, and most importantly, with yield potential. There was a yield and economic advantage with AN over urea and for spring N application over fall application. Since mountain meadows are often wet for long periods in the spring, however, fall application may be the only option for many producers. For fall applied N, AN should be used as the N source, since this source would provide the highest yield response and fertilizer recovery efficiency.
