Common Problems in Psychotherapy Training for Psychiatry Residents

This guest column addresses an important problem in providing care to chronically ill patients while training residents in outpatient psychotherapy. It primarily discusses the potentially detrimental effects on patients of having an endless succession of inexperienced therapists. However, a clinic experience that focuses on this population also has implications for the quality of residents' learning concerning how to conduct effective psychotherapy with more typically responsive outpatients.
