Evaluation of ISO method and VIDAS automated system for identifying Listeria and Salmonella in selected foods.

The presence of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella was examined in 42 kashar cheese, 42 butter and 38 baked potato samples obtained from a market in Istanbul, Turkey, between February and May 2005, using the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 11290 and 6579 methods, respectively, and the mini Vitek Immuno Diagnostic Assay System (VIDAS). The results showed that L. monocytogenes was not detected in the butter and baked potato samples using the ISO and VIDAS methods; however, it was detected in 4 and 3 cheese samples using the ISO method and VIDAS method, respectively. All the VIDAS-positive samples and only 3 ISO-positive samples were confirmed as L. monocytogenes. Salmonella was not observed in any of the samples; however, other Enterobacteriaceae organisms were isolated. An inoculation study with L. monocytogenes and S. typhi using the same samples did not find any difference in the efficiency of ISO and mini-VIDAS methods with respect to identifying Salmonella.
