The incorporation of ketone groups into poly(4-hydroxystyrene)s main chain by radical copolymerization of 4-(tert-butoxy)styrene and 2,2-diphenyl-4- methylene-1,3-dioxolane and its photoscission was reported. ~1H- and ~(13)C-NMR spectra were recorded on a Varian UNITY INOVA 400 with tetra-methyl silane or a solvent residual peak as the internal standard. A solution of 2,2-diphenyl-4-methylene-1,3-dioxorane (DPMD) (1.19 g, 5.00 mmol), tert-butoxystyrene (BOSt) (0.88 g, 5.00 mmol), and di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) (43.9 mg, 0.30 mmol) in chlorobenzene (5 mL) was placed in a glass ampoule, and then degassed through three freeze-pump-thaw cycles. A suspension of poly(tBOSt74-co-K26) (100 mg, 0.34 mmol) in formic acid (1 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 24 h under argon atmosphere. The IR spectrum of poly(tBOSt74-co-K26) showed the absorptions around 1709 cm~(-1), which was attributable to the ketone moiety derived from DPMD.
