Standards for Keeping Confined Spaces Safe

On May 1, OSHA published its final rule on confined space in the construction industry, scheduled to take effect on August 3. The scope (1926.1201) gives examples of confined spaces found in construction, including those often encountered in the painting industry such as tanks, silos, ship holders, boilers and penstocks. The remaining sections (1203-1211) provide specific requirements for working in these spaces. This new and welcome rule, which will raise the bar significantly for painting contractors working in construction, is long overdue.
