Modern extrusion coating dies typicaily include internal deckle systems that are designed to provide variable coating width and minimal edge trim waste. A reduced amount of edge trim is often achieved by tuning the internal deckle component positions in a manner that decreases the size of the edge beads on each side of the coating. These edge profile control deckle systems are generally more effective for broad molecular weight and highly branched coating resins, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), than for performance materials, such as ethylene - acrylic ester - maleic anhydride terpolymer. This study will evaluate new deckle component shapes using laboratory trials and using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for both conventional and performance grades of extrusion coating resins. Specific internal deckle blade shapes will be shown to provide improved capabilities for edge profile control for certain resin grades.
