Coatings applied to FRP fall into two main categories: gel coats and conventional coatings. Gel coats are polyester-or vinyl ester-based coatings applied either to the mold surface before lamination or directly to the part after fabrication. Gel coats are applied in the shop and require the use of plural-component equipment and MEKP catalyst. Conventional coatings suitable for FRP include epoxies and polyurethanes. Surface preparation typically includes power washing, removal of grease or oil in accordance with SSPC-SP 1, and hand or power tool cleaning in accordance with SSPC-SP 2.
