Through the late 1980s,lead-based paint was commonly used to protect bridges from corrosion.As research has since demonstrated (e.g.,U.S.Occupational Safety and Health standard on lead,29 CFR 1026.62),exposure to lead is a health hazard for workers involved in the demolition and renovation of structural steel,while the hazardous waste generated in lead paint removal is also damaging to the environment.One strategy used to deal with the hazards of lead-based paint is removing it by abrasive blasting while capturing and containing the waste generated.Due to the complexity and cost of this strategy,however,over coating lead based paint is often used as an alternative.
