Based on work on the twin North Grand Island Bridges on the Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway in New York Stare, the authors discuss methods for removing chlorides from substrates before protective coating application. The article presents findings from laboratory tests conducted on steel sections from the bridge as well as field tests, abrasive blast cleaning methods, and other applications fur measuring and reducing chloride concentrations on steel.
