Are transition zone biopsies necessary in transrectal ultrasound-guided transperineal prostate biopsy protocol? Results of a Chinese population-based study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of routine transperineal transition zone (TZ) biopsies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1028 consecutive patients underwent transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies for the first time. Sextant biopsies and additional two-core TZ biopsies were performed. RESULTS: Prostate cancer detection rate was increased by sampling two additional cores from TZ. CONCLUSIONS: Transition zone biopsies might be reserved to improve the detection rate of prostate cancer in transperineal biopsy protocol.
