The cytotoxic activity of a variety of Jeju coastal seaweeds against a panel of tumour cell lines was tested in vitro using a calorimetric 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Twenty-three extracts were screened against HL-60 (human promyelocytic leukaemia cell line), HT-29 (human colon carcinoma cell line), B16F10 (murine melanoma cell line) and A549 (human lung cancer cell line). The ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts of Sargassum thunbergii and Dictyopteris divaricata showed excellent cytotoxic activity against the HL-60 cell line. Furthermore, the S. thunbergii extract also exhibited good cytotoxic activity against the HT-29 and B16F10 cell lines. To explore the mechanisms of cytotoxicity of S. thunbergii and 2). divaricata, we used several measures of apoptosis to determine whether these processes were involved in EtOAc fraction-induced HL-60 cell death.
