Q1 production up from Q4, down from year ago

A stronger economy and increased consumption during the first quarter helped the coal industry to 2% higher production levels compared with the last three months of 2009. But at 265.3 million short tons, mines are far below the 281.4 million st they were for the first quarter of 2009, according to preliminary data released by the Energy Information Administration on Monday.
