Ala. considers permits for four new mines

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management is seeking comment on discharge permits for four proposed coal mines. Birmingham Coal & Coke Inc. is seeking permits for three mines. The company currently operates three surface coal mines in Alabama, which as of the third quarter of this year produced more than 260,000 short tons of coal and employed on average about 65 people, according to US Mine Safety and Health Administration records.
