Cloud Peak Energy expressed growing confidence in export markets last week, predicting its overseas shipments to Asia will rise to 2.5 million short tons this year, up significantly from the 1.6 million st shipped in 2009. Executives at Cloud Peak, the third largest US producer of coal by volume, say it has found a firm foothold in the growing Pan-Pacific trade for thermal coal, which has seen western producers including Peabody Energy and Arch Coal send test shipments overseas in recent years.
