Carbon caps not factored into utility credit ratings: Standard & Poor's

Current corporate ratings on utility companies do not incorporate risks related to potential greenhouse gas legislation, a Standard & Poor's analyst said Wednesday. S&P US Utilities and Infrastructure Director Swaminathan Venkataraman said that cash flow risks following potential GHG legislation cannot be quantified because there is so much uncertainty surrounding when it will occur. As such, he said, analysts can- not incorporate the potential credit risks into firms' current profiles.
