Lower average coal prices hurt Walter Q1

Releasing its first-quarter results late Thursday, Walter Industries said that its Jim Walter Resources coal-production division turned out 1.6 million short tons for the quarter, and coal sales were about flat compared to the year-ago quarter at 1.5 million st. The Alabama metallurgical coal producer is on track to achieve the previously announced expectation of 2.8 million- 3 million st for the first half of the year, it said. Overall cost per short ton of 48.47 dollars also was in line with the company's previously announced expectation range.
