Aussie coal drives Peabody Q3 profits; US production, pricing fall flat

US coalfields lagged behind off-thechart performance at Peabody Energy's Australian operations, as mines Down Under led the world's largest coal company to record third-quarter earnings. Peabody, based in St. Louis, Missouri, reported a nearly seven-fold jump to 377.1 million dollars in quarterly earnings powered in large part by Australian revenue that jumped from 307.6 million dollars in 2007 to 789 million dollars this year.
