Kinder expands Pier IX terminal in Q1 to 12 million-short ton annual capacity

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners expanded Pier IX Terminal's export coal capacity by 30 percent to about 12 million short tons/year this year as the company is expecting strong coal exports to continue at least into the near future. Kinder spokesman Joe Hollier said Thursday that the expansion project was completed in the first quarter and included adding a new dock, which will allow the Newport News, Virginia, terminal to receive coal via vessels in addition to rail.
