While most of the country is focused on the fate of the 700 billion dollars Wall Street bailout package, congressional Democrats also plan to offer an economic stimulus package designed to help Americans cope with rising poverty rates, escalating fuel costs and other financial challenges. The Senate and House proposals appear to differ significantly, but both are generally opposed by their chambers' Republicans as too expensive. If Senate leaders fail to win enough Republican support for a stimulus package, it will stall. A super-majority of 60 members is needed to pass controversial legislation in the upper chamber.
