Mirant posts loss in second quarter 2008

US gas and power company Mirant on Friday posted a loss of 3.90 dollars/share (-783 million dollars) for the second quarter, down from net income of 4.91 dollars/share (1.256 billion dollars) for the same period a year ago. The net loss from continuing operations was 4.14 dollars/share (-832 million dollars), against a loss in the year-ago quarter of 32 cents/share (-83 million dollars). Atlanta-based Mirant noted the 2008 results included hedging losses of 874 million dollars.
