Patriot Coal sinking new air shaft for Highland underground mine

Patriot Coal is sinking a new air shaft near Corydon in western Henderson County, Kentucky, as part of a plan to add another continuous miner unit to increase production at the Highland No. 9 underground steam coal mine. The St. Louis-based company, which hopes to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization later this month, also is implementing a new alternative work schedule at Highland, located along the Henderson County-Union County border in western Kentucky (PCT 11/7).
