US coal exports fall in first quarter, production slighly lower: EIA

The US exported 1.2 million fewer short tons in the first quarter of 2013 than it did in the same period in 2012, the Energy Information Administration said Tuesday in its Short-Term Energy Outlook. According to EIA data, the US exported 27.4 million st in Q1 2013 down from 28.6 million st in Q1 2012. The downturn in the market is being driven by the continuing economic weakness in Europe - the largest importer of US coal, falling international coal prices and increasing production in other coal producing countries, according to EIA.
