Although perhaps not widely well known, there have been many great moments in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences that involved significant leadership from chemists. This is not surprising, if one realizes that there can be many opportunities for symbiosis between chemistry and the pharmaceutical sciences. It is said that the great chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele made his great advances in chemistry from his intimate knowledge of and his indefatigable probing of the secrets of pharmaceutical substances. All of Scheele's investigations and discoveries were made in the Swedish pharmacies in which he worked, first as an apprentice, then as a clerk, and finally as owner of his own pharmacy in the small Swedish town of Koping.
