SCE&G to retire two coal units five years early

South Carolina Electric & Gas has accelerated plans to retire its 115-MW Canadys-2 and 180-MW Canadys-3 coal units, officials of SCE&G and parent Scana said Wednesday. SCE&G also said in disclosing future generation plans that, by 2019, it will triple the portion of its annual electricity needs that come from nuclear power, and halve the shares that come from coal-fired and natural gas-fired units.
