Patriot expects Q3 output to fall on geology, closure

Patriot Coal expects third-quarter production to be down about 450,000 short tons because of geological issues affecting its Federal and Panther longwall mines and the early closure of a thermal coal mine, the St. Louis-based coal producer said Friday in a statement. Because of the lower production, Patriot now expects the average cost per ton to be several dollars higher than the previous Q3 guidance, it said.
