摘要

Nanotechnology capitalizes on the unique properties of matter that appear in the size range of 100 nm or less. The technology allows for the generation of a whole new family of materials and devices. In Part I of this series, the benefits of these materials and devices were discussed. Many products incorporating nanotechnology have already been developed and more applications are being discovered at an exponential rate. The creation of an unprecedented number and variety of entirely new classes of materials and products has raised safety concerns for nanomaterial manufacturers, for consumers and patients, and for the environment. Nanoparticles have the potential to harm individuals, workers, and the environment as irritants, haptens, as reactive substances, and as interactive substances.
