Wells in the X-ray area offshore northwest Java were all produced by electrical submersible pump (ESP) until a gas zone was discovered in the XM area in 1987. The gas zone proved to be of sufficient pressure and volume to support a local gas-lift (GL) project. The gas source has depleted and cannot maintain all the production from the wells. As the gas pressure depletes, wells are converted from GL back to ESP. To minimize down-time during ESP changeout, an ESP/GL hybrid was proposed to continue production while replacing a failed ESP.
