The most important factor in successful oil-well cementing is displacing drilling fluid from the casing/formation annulus and conditioning the annular surfaces properly to accept and bond with the cement. Oil-based muds (OBM's) and synthetic-based muds (SBM's) can be displaced successfully before cementing with aqueous fluids if the aqueous fluids contain surfactants chemically compatible with the OBM or SBM.
