West Virginia state delegates have introduced a comprehensive mine safety bill that, among other things, calls for tripling maximum civil penalties for some violations of mine health and safety laws as well as tougher jail sentences. H.B. 4085, introduced January 16, was referred to the West Virginia House's Judiciary Committee. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, a Democrat, will introduce his own mine safety legislation on January 23, his press secretary, Jacqueline Proctor, said in a Thursday interview.
