Alpha Natural Resources has limited options as it explores legal avenues to challenge the sale of a federal coal tract unexpectedly won by Peabody Energy last week, according to people familiar with the process. The coal company, based in Abingdon, Virginia, plans to participate in a review of the Belle Ayr North coal lease sale to be conducted by antitrust lawyers at the Department of Justice, but one law professor said this week that Alpha has very few viable options to pursue.
