James River produces fewer CAPP tons, closes some mines to control costs

Despite reporting a first quarter net loss of 7.3 million dollars, down from a Q1 2006 net income of 1.4 million dollars, James River Coal Chairman and CEO Peter Socha said Tuesday that he is pleased with the company's Q1 progress. Cash costs/short ton declined in both Central Appalachia and the Illinois Basin in the face of cost increases in raw materials, workers compensation, government-mandated safety costs and higher than normal medical costs, he said.
