UMWA wins organizing victory at Peabody mine

By a narrow 13-vote margin, the United Mine Workers of America appears to have captured its largest organizing prize in years in the Illinois Basin in a National Labor Relations Board-sponsored election Friday at Peabody Energy's Willow Lake underground mine in Saline County, Illinois. Because of the closeness of the 219 to 206 vote in favor of the union, St. Louis-based Peabody, the world's largest privately owned coal producer, is evaluating its options, according to Peabody spokeswoman Megan Gallagher.
