Two new compounds containing triarylamine and 2,5-diaryl-1,3,4-oxadiazole units, 2-{3-[2-(4-N,N-di-p-tolylaminophenyl) ethenyl]phenyl}-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (I) and 2-{4-[2-(4-N,N-di-p-tolylaminophenyl)ethenyl]phenyl}-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1, 3,4-oxadiazole (II), were synthesized and their crystal structures were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In both crystal structures, 1,3,4-oxadiazole, olefinic bond and three benzene rings except two p-tolyl groups are nearly coplanar, and the formation of pi-pi stacks is observed. The photoluminescence of the thin films of II was red shifted from that of I. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. [References: 14]
