I was born in a small town in western Minnesota in 1953. I went to college at the University of Minnesota and then medical school at Mayo Medical School, where I met my future wife who was a classmate. Following graduation from medical school, we went to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, where we did our residency training and then to the Indian Health Service in southern Arizona for a year. Following this, we returned to Rochester where I did a three-year GI fellowship, and my wife entered a family practice. She later became a Medical Geneticist with an interest in familial colon cancer.
