Thailand commits to rice-based bioplastic

Thailand is planning to invest in efforts to put large stockpiles of the country’s rice to use - to create a range of bioplastic products. Thai industry minister Chakramon Phasukavanich announced in July that the government’s commerce ministry would buy 10,000 tonnes of surplus, stockpiled rice at a reasonable price, and convert it into bioplastic. The industrialisation trial will provide material for products such as carrier and waste bags, horticultural products, traffic cones, and other non-food applications.
